The estate of Mario Puzo tasked Ed Falco (yes, he is related to Edie) with a daunting mission – turn the late author’s notes for a prospective Godfather screenplay into a fully realized novel. Set in 1933, it serves as backstory to the familiar saga of the Corleone family as portrayed in the three Coppola films. The headstrong Santino is seventeen and already enmeshed in his father’s business, despite Don Vito’s misgivings. The Luca Brasi character is fleshed out, initially quite a different portrait than the one the Puzo had painted. Falco traces the origins of the five families – their battles for Mafia supremacy, their sadistic brutalities and shifting alliances. Keeping the work true to the original master while maintaining a writing style of his own – in our conversation, Falco explains how he approached this ambitious project.

David Baldacci’s The Innocent pairs a government sponsored assassin with a fourteen year old girl, seeking the villains who killed her parents. Baldacci explains how, in Will Robie, he creates a sympathetic character that readers will root for, when initially the man appears to be a cold blooded killer without a conscience. David projects Robie as one of his continuing characters for subsequent novels, a tough task indeed without humanizing this terminator-like entity. Featuring one of his more complex plot lines, The Innocent will keep you guessing until the final chapters. Also in our conversation, Baldacci addresses the current Secret Service scandal, given that his research and personal relationships have provided him with a unique insight into how that agency functions.
