Blanquita Cullum

Ms. Blanquita Walsh Cullum serves as a Governor on the United States Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG). Nominated by President George W. Bush in 2002, Governor Cullum is the first Hispanic woman and the first radio talk show host to serve on the BBG. The United States Senate unanimously confirmed her to that position. The BBG is the independent, federal agency responsible for all U.S. government and government-sponsored, non-military international broadcasting. The nine BBG members, including the Secretary of State, oversee the Voice of America (VOA), Radio Free Asia (RFA), Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), Radio and Television Marti and the Middle Eastern Broadcast Network (MBN).

Governor Cullum is the Chairperson of the Radio Free Asia Committee and the Language Service Review Committee (LSR). The LSR manages the congressionally-mandated process of determining, on an annual basis, how effectively federal resources are being distributed to the more than 60 language services that the BBG oversees. Governor Cullum is the former Chairperson for the VOA Committee and still serves as an active member on that committee. On behalf of the BBG, Governor Cullum has traveled to China, Moscow, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Vietnam, Turkey, Cambodia, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Taiwan, Korea, Peru and Venezuela, where she has met with heads of state, the diplomatic community, journalists, station owners and affiliates as well as identifying and meeting with potential VOA affiliates.
